The rattle was my grandfather’s responsibility. He took care of all the gifts that were to be given away at the potlatch. He could stand on top of all the goods that were gathered together for the event and keep watch over all the valuables. As a form of entertainment at the potlatch, he performed with a headdress and a rattle.
