The person on top of the chief is the oldest nephew, who stands ready to take on his role when it is time for him to take over the chief's name. We have a White Heron in our waters near Chemainus. These birds are not native to Chemainus. It is a sign for our people to look, listen and come to some consensus why the bird appeared. Personally, I think it is a sign for all of us to wake up and listen to Mother Earth's cries.

chocolate lily root digging paddle Angela Marston Coast Salish Yellow Cedar, Red Cedar, Cedar Root, Wild Cherry Bark, Abalone, Acrylic Paint 37 x 4-1/4" sold Root paddles were smaller than canoe paddles and specially made for digging roots by the Coast Salish people. They were also used for pulling the canoe, or branches toward ones self. The Chocolate Lily has roots that resemble grains of rice. It was harvested and boiled in cedar boxes and eaten like rice.
