James Madison

Snohomish/Tlingit

James R. Madison is a Coast Salish native artist and a member of the Tulalip Tribes.

He was born in December, 1973 and lives in Tulalip, WA. His carving and teachings started long ago, at the age of eight.  Learning from his Grandfather, Father and Uncle, sparked more than an interest to want to learn more. James studied at the University of Washington and received his Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts in 2000. He is known for  his traditional, yet modern artwork and works with a wide range of mediums.  These include glass, wood, bronze, and stainless steel.

“I create art with an open mind in the sense that I am always thinking of new ways to add a modern twist to a traditional piece.  This allows for me to help to keep my culture alive.  As we move into the future, so does the teachings of my ancestors.”
