Descendant of the ‘Namgis First Nation, and a grandson of Chief Alvin Edgar Alfred

Joe began his interest in the coastal art forms at a young age. At the age of 12-13 when he did a course under the instruction of master carver Doug Cranmer. Joe continued with exploring the coastal art forms in flat design until the age of 21 when he was exposed to the carving aspect of the coastal arm forms. Joe has had the privilege to have worked with many of the great artists along the coast over the many years he has been doing the art form. Joe found inspiration in the works of master carvers like Willie Seaweed Mungo Martian, Bob Harris, as well as others. Joe works in flat design, wood, metal, and stone. He enjoys exploring the traditional coastal forms as well as sometimes exploring the more contemporary use of the coastal arts.

Joe headed a large project in the Netherlands, the Dolfinarium Harderwijk.

The project consisted of a Kwakwaka’wakw village which encompassed the legend of the Undersea Kingdom.
