William Cook Jr.

Kwakwaka'wakw

William (Billy) was born in Alert Bay at the northern tip of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. His heritage is of the 'Namgis, Ma'amtagila and Mamalilikala tribes.

Billy and his brother Rande are both artists. Their interest in art was spurred at an early age by their grandfather, Gus Matilpi. Gus taught them the essential elements of art. As well, he impressed upon them both the importance of art, and the fact that it can be used to connect and preserve the culture of their people.

William’s specialty is beautifully and deeply engraved (hand-carved) silver and gold jewelry. His pieces feature deep cuts that glimmer in the light, and often times include designs that are cut out. His work is instantly recognizable because of his unique style.
